I’m going to retrace my steps for a minute. Ages ago, I lived in a rundown Hollywood apartment complex. My neighbor was a struggling actor named Sam. He became one of maybe three people who knew I wrote songs. I was far from pursuing a career in music. It was a hobby, the kind of hobby no one knows is your hobby. Anyway, one night Sam came over with a cheap mic he’d bought at Guitar Center and encouraged me to record. I set up in my bathroom that weekend and recorded four songs. I think he made this ‘album cover’ in iTunes to subtly push me closer to believing bigger things were possible. I love Sam for that. Years later, one of the songs (45) Fortyfive became what I think is the best song on the first Bootstraps album.
